How to use this site...

This is the online learning space for the English for MSc Economics course. In order to maximize the effectiveness of this short pre-sessional English course, you will be expected to study independently before (and after) each session using the materials and tasks on this website. Your independent study will prepare you for the practical tasks during the face-to-face sessions.

You can find the independent study tasks by following the menus at the top of this page (Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4). From there, you can click on the individual sessions for the aims, topic information, video activities, reading activities, and homework tasks.

Before each session, you should read the session aims and topic information. These will tell you the focus of the session. Then, follow the instructions and complete any video or reading activities that are specified as ESSENTIAL. There are also some optional video and reading activities that you can follow if you so wish. After each session, you should complete any homework that is specified as ESSENTIAL. Some homework  tasks are specified as OPTIONAL, and these are for you to decide whether or not to complete them. We recommend that you are selective.

Welcome to the English for MSc Economics pre-sessional course!

If you are reading this, you are enrolled, or planning to enrol, on an MSc Economics course at a UK university, which means this English course is for you. The very nature of a postgraduate degree, such as an MSc Economics, implies that you will have studied at university before, but this is likely your first time studying at a university in the UK. This course is designed to make the transition into academic life in the UK as smooth as possible so that you can thrive in your postgraduate studies.

Whereas many pre-sessional EAP courses focus on English for General Academic Purposes, this course focuses on English for Specific Academic Purposes. That is to say, the materials and activities you will engage with on this course reflect as closely as possible those that you will be required to engage with on your MSc Economics course. This means that you will always be able to see the direct application of what you are learning.

The forum, also accessible from the menu at the top of this page, is where the tutors will make announcements, such as reading suggestions or timetable changes, so please subscribe for notifications. You can also ask questions to your tutors or classmates using the forum, but you can email tutors if you prefer. Forum discussion, though, is a valuable learning opportunity, and one that you will be expected to engage with on your MSc course, so please use this space as a platform to practise!

The Week 1, Day 1, Session 1 page is open now. There are some videos about living and studying in the UK and some reading links offering tips for students in the UK. Please follow the menus at the top of this page to take a look!
