Week 1 - Day 4

SESSION 1 - Understanding assessment questions

Lesson Aims:

  • To understand assessment questions

  • To generate and discuss ideas for an assessment question

  • To introduce the spoken and written components of this course's assignment

There are two components to the assignment for this course: a five-minute oral presentation; and a 1000-word literature review. These two components have been chosen to represent the kinds of assignments and texts that you will be completing during your MSc Economics course. Before we look at the assignment in more detail, though, it is important to make sure that you are able to understand what the brief is asking you to do. Assignment briefs and exam papers use 'directive words', such as analyse or evaluate, to instruct you how to answer a question. In order to answer an assessment question well, it is vital to understand the meanings behind different directive words.

In the session, we will deconstruct a range of assessment questions, look at the meaning of directive words, and generate ideas for assessment questions, which will lead into the introduction of the assignment for this course.

Before the session, please watch the video and read the two links marked * ESSENTIAL. This material has been selected to better prepare you to complete the tasks during the session.

Homework - Forum Task *ESSENTIAL

The course forum is a place where you can articulate your ideas, which will require you to refine and modify them. Furthermore, because the forum pools everyone’s knowledge and expertise, it can help you gain better understanding of course material. Participating in an academic forum takes effort, but it can also be one of the most rewarding learning activities. Give it a try!

  1. Watch the video for some forum discussion tips    (see right)

  2. Post one initial idea for your assignment on the forum (this does not have to be your final idea)

  3. Post a response to at least three of your peers' ideas

  4. Consider these details in your response:

  • Are the topics/ points relevant to the assessment question?

  • Does the answer/ argument follow a logical structure?

  • Can you recommend any further reading?
